Hypno-psychotherapy Support for ARFID & Restrictive Eating Difficulties

ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and restrictive eating difficulties can affect people of all ages and are often far more complex than a lot of people realise. Clients often tell me that people don’t seem to understand that they are not being a “fussy eater”, far from it, they literally cannot face eating most foods that most of us take for granted. I have seen this quite a lot, it is more common that you might think and I understand the significant anxiety, discomfort, fear, sensory issues, or strong emotional reactions connected to certain foods, textures, smells, that this issue brings.

Some clients I have worked with have had formal diagnoses of ARFID, while others have struggled with restrictive eating patterns for many years without ever seeking an official diagnosis. In many cases, people tell me they have eaten only a very limited range of foods since childhood and feel embarrassed, frustrated, or misunderstood because of it.

Over the past 26 years working as a hypno-psychotherapist, I have supported clients experiencing food-related anxiety, restrictive eating habits, sensory-based food avoidance, and emotional stress connected to eating situations.

Restrictive eating difficulties can sometimes affect confidence, relationships, social situations, family life, travelling, work, and overall wellbeing, again, this is more significant that most of the public realise. Clients often can’t face a dinner date with a partner for example.  Avoding celebrations, holidays, or eating around other people because they worry about judgement, anxiety, or feeling different from others.

Understanding Restrictive Eating Difficulties

Every person’s experience is different. For some people, food avoidance may relate more to anxiety or fear, while others may struggle with sensory sensitivities, textures, smells, past experiences, or strong emotional reactions connected to eating.

Restrictive eating difficulties can sometimes occur alongside anxiety disorders, autism spectrum conditions, OCD, sensory processing difficulties, gastrointestinal conditions, or other psychological or medical factors but you may have none of these.

Because eating difficulties can sometimes affect nutrition and physical health, appropriate medical advice and assessment are important where symptoms are severe, worsening, or causing concern.

How Hypno-psychotherapy May Help

Hypnosis is usually experienced as a calm and focused state of relaxation. Sessions are tailored individually and may help some clients feel calmer, less anxious, and more able to gradually explore healthier or less stressful responses around food and eating situations. With psychotherapeutic techniques, this works well with the hypnosis to enable clients to deal with these situations in a much better way.

Rather than using a generic approach, I aim to understand your individual experiences, food anxieties, emotional triggers, stress levels, confidence issues, and the practical difficulties restrictive eating may be causing in your daily life. Part of how I work with people involves delving into your background and

Sessions may focus on:

  • Reducing anxiety connected to food or eating situations
  • Building confidence around eating
  • Managing stress and emotional responses
  • Exploring healthier routines and behaviours
  • Reducing anticipatory anxiety around social eating
  • Developing calmer responses to food-related stress

Professional and Non-Judgemental Support

I understand that many people with restrictive eating difficulties feel embarrassed, misunderstood, or frustrated by their experiences. Sessions are always private, supportive, professional, and non-judgemental.

My aim is to provide realistic and supportive help tailored to the individual rather than exaggerated claims or guarantees. No ethical therapist should promise specific outcomes, as every person and situation is different.
