Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy for IBS
If you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), you’ll know it can affect far more than just your stomach. The bloating, discomfort, cramps, diarrhoea, constipation, urgency, and uncertainty can sometimes end up controlling where you go, what you do, and even how confident you feel about leaving the house. In my experience, you might be surprised how many people this affects and how much it can impact their daily lives.
Over the past 26 years working as a hypno-psychotherapist, I have helped many people with IBS-related issues. One thing that clients often tell me is that they become trapped in a cycle where they worry about their symptoms, and then the stress and anxiety surrounding the condition seem to make things even worse.
Many people with IBS also develop worries about travelling, socialising, eating out, long journeys, work meetings, or simply being somewhere where they feel they may not have easy access to a toilet. If this sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone.

My Experience Working With IBS Clients
I have worked with a lot of people experiencing IBS symptoms over the years, and one thing I have noticed time and time again is that stress often seems to play a significant role for many sufferers. That doesn’t mean stress causes IBS, and everybody’s situation is different, but many people notice that periods of increased stress, anxiety, pressure, or worry can coincide with worsening symptoms.
We’ve all experienced that “butterflies in the stomach” feeling before an exam, interview, presentation, first date, or stressful event. This is one reason researchers have become increasingly interested in what is often referred to as the gut-brain connection.
The digestive system and nervous system communicate constantly, and researchers continue to study how emotional wellbeing, stress, and digestive symptoms may influence one another.
What Is Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy?
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a specialist form of hypnotherapy that has been researched for people living with IBS. Rather than focusing purely on symptoms themselves, sessions often aim to help clients feel calmer, reduce stress and anxiety, and develop more positive responses to the thoughts, worries, and habits that sometimes develop around digestive symptoms.
Hypnosis is usually experienced as a calm and focused state of relaxation. Most people remain aware of what is happening throughout the session and many describe it as deeply relaxing.
Rather than using a generic approach, I tailor sessions to the individual. Some people are struggling mainly with anxiety about symptoms, others are dealing with confidence issues, while some simply feel exhausted by the constant impact IBS has had on their lives.
Research Into Hypnotherapy for IBS
Gut-directed hypnotherapy has been studied for several decades and has attracted interest from researchers, gastroenterologists, and healthcare professionals.
NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) has recognised hypnotherapy as one of several approaches that may be considered for some people with IBS whose symptoms continue despite other management strategies. In fact, some NHS services and specialist gastroenterology clinics have offered gut-directed hypnotherapy programmes for suitable patients
Research published in journals including the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, Psychosomatic Medicine, and other gastroenterology publications has explored the potential role of hypnotherapy as a supportive approach for some IBS sufferers.
As with any therapy, results vary from person to person and no specific outcomes can be guaranteed.
How Hypnotherapy May Help
Sessions may focus on:
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Managing symptom-related worries
- Building confidence when socialising or travelling
- Relaxation and emotional wellbeing
- Breaking cycles of anticipatory anxiety
- Developing calmer responses to symptoms
Many people tell me that one of the hardest parts of IBS is not knowing when symptoms may occur. Helping somebody feel calmer, more confident, and less controlled by their symptoms can often have a positive impact on everyday life.
Professional and Supportive Help
IBS can sometimes feel very isolating because other people often don’t fully understand how much impact it can have on your day-to-day life. My approach is supportive, realistic, and tailored to the individual.
I don’t make exaggerated claims and I certainly don’t offer miracle cures. What I can offer is over 26 years of experience helping people address stress, anxiety, confidence issues, and behavioural patterns that may be affecting their wellbeing.
