What Is Hypnotherapy And How Does It Work?
Many people are curious about hypnosis and hypnotherapy, but are unsure what it actually involves.
Some people imagine stage hypnosis or mind control, but professional clinical hypnotherapy is very different, and hypno-psychotherapy is different still.
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses guided relaxation, focused attention and suggestion techniques to help people work on thoughts, behaviours, habits and emotional responses. I am one of the people who use hypnotherapy alongside other approaches to help manage issues such as anxiety, stress, confidence problems, smoking habits, phobias and emotional wellbeing.
I provide hypnotherapy and hypno-psychotherapy sessions for clients across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, including Ripley, Mansfield, Alfreton, Belper, Heanor, Chesterfield and surrounding areas.
Hypnotherapy should not replace appropriate medical diagnosis, mental health care or treatment from a qualified healthcare professional where needed.
What Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and concentration. Most people experience similar states in everyday life, such as becoming deeply absorbed in a film, driving on “autopilot” or losing track of time while concentrating on something.
During hypnosis, people are usually deeply relaxed but still aware of what is happening around them. Contrary to popular myths, you do not lose control or become unconscious.
Professional hypnotherapy is very different from stage hypnosis entertainment.
The Royal College of Psychiatrists provides information on hypnosis and hypnotherapy, and the NHS also offers guidance on choosing a qualified practitioner.
How Does Hypno-psychotherapy Work?
Hypnotherapy aims to help people become more aware of patterns of thinking, behaviour and emotional responses. Sessions often combine relaxation techniques, focused attention and therapeutic conversation.
As a qualified hypno-psychotherapist, I may combine hypnosis with other therapeutic approaches where appropriate. This allows sessions to be adapted to the individual rather than using the same approach for every client. To you, this means im more equipped.
Some people find hypnotherapy helpful because it allows them to relax deeply and focus more clearly on specific goals, habits or emotional difficulties.
What Can Hypnotherapy Help With?
People seek hypnotherapy for many different reasons. Some of the more common issues include:
- Anxiety and stress
- Panic attacks
- Confidence and self-esteem issues
- Smoking cessation
- Phobias and fears
- Sleep difficulties
- Public speaking anxiety
- Weight management support
- Habit change
- Relaxation and emotional wellbeing
Some research has explored the possible benefits of hypnosis for conditions such as IBS, pain management and stress-related symptoms. You can read more in this BBC article about hypnosis research.
Results vary from person to person and hypnotherapy is not a guaranteed cure.
What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?
Most people describe hypnosis as feeling calm, relaxed and focused. Some people feel physically heavy and deeply relaxed, while others simply feel mentally absorbed and comfortable.
People are usually aware of what is being said throughout the session and can stop the process at any time if they wish.
Can You Get Stuck In Hypnosis?
No. You cannot get stuck in hypnosis or lose control of yourself. Hypnosis is considered a normal mental state of focused attention and people naturally come out of it.
You remain aware and capable of responding throughout the session.
Is Hypno-psychotherapy Safe?
For most people, hypno-psychotherapy is considered safe when carried out by a properly trained and qualified professional.
I am insured, professionally registered and trained in hypno-psychotherapy. I also undertake professional supervision and follow ethical guidelines relating to client care and confidentiality.
If you are currently under psychiatric care or experiencing severe mental health symptoms, hypnotherapy should be used alongside appropriate medical support from your GP or mental health professional.
Why Choose A Qualified Hypno-Psychotherapist?
Training and experience matter when choosing a therapist.
I have been helping clients since 2001 and work with people from across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. As a hypno-psychotherapist, I can use a broader range of therapeutic approaches where appropriate rather than relying purely on hypnosis techniques alone.
I offer a calm, confidential and non-judgemental environment where sessions are tailored to the individual client.
Scientific Research Into Hypnosis
Research into hypnosis and hypnotherapy continues to develop. Brain imaging studies suggest hypnosis involves measurable changes in attention and awareness during focused states.
